Electric vehicle (EV) chargers are an essential component of EVs. Indeed, it has a higher upfront cost, but this EV charger helps to reduce fuel expenses in the long term. Is the EV charger located outside? It can be vulnerable to extreme weather, especially rain.

How Do I Protect My EV Charger from the Rain?

In this blog, I am going to share essential suggestions on how to protect your EV charger from the rain and ensure it stays functional for years to come.

Choose the Right Location

The location of the EV charger is critical to protecting it from rain. Ideally, it should be installed in a covered area, such as a carport, garage, or covered parking lot. If a covered location is not available in your area, you can install a weatherproof cover over the charger. Buy an affordable weatherproof cover from a hardware store and protect your electric vehicle charger from rain.

Install a Weatherproof Enclosure

Another way to protect your EV charger from rain is to install a weatherproof enclosure around it. A weatherproof enclosure can protect the charger from rain, wind, and other weather elements. Enclosures come in different sizes and styles and can be made of metal or plastic.

When choosing an enclosure, ensure it is rated for outdoor use and has enough space to accommodate the charger and any wiring. Some enclosures come with a lock to prevent unauthorised access to the charger; you can try them too!

Use a Waterproof Cover

A waterproof cover is an affordable and effective way to protect your EV charger from the rain. Waterproof covers come in various sizes and can be custom-fit to your EV charger. They are typically made of heavy-duty vinyl or polyester material and are designed to withstand rain, wind, and snow.

Things to Note before You Purchase a Waterproof Cover

  • Ensure it has a tight fit and is made of durable material.
  • It should also be easy to install and remove when needed. Make sure to choose a cover that has ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.

Elevate the EV Charger

Another way to protect your EV charger from rain is to elevate it off the ground. You can install a post or a platform to raise the charger above ground level. It prevents rainwater from accumulating around the charger and causing damage to the electrical components.

Things You Should Consider for Elevating the EV Charger

  • Ensure it is securely anchored to the post or platform to prevent it from falling or tipping over.
  • Check the charger is out of the way of any potential hazards, such as trees or power lines.

Install a Drip Loop

Have you heard about the drip loop? It is a simple yet effective way to protect your EV charger from rain. A drip loop is a U-shaped bend in the cable that allows water to drip off the cable and away from the charger.

It prevents water from running down the cable and into the charger, causing damage to the electrical components. Please make sure it is positioned correctly to prevent water from pooling around the charger. It should be installed in a location where it is easy to access and adjust if needed.

These five suggestions are very effective in preventing your EV charger from being damaged, especially during rain. Do you have a better solution? Do not hesitate to share it with me. Learn more about the electric vehicle:
