How Many Batteries Do You Need for a 3000-Watt Inverter?

It is necessary to purchase three 200Ah batteries of 12 volts or two 200Ah batteries of 24 volts for 3000 watt or 3kW solar system/inverter.

If you need a 3kW solar system and want more information before investing, then this article is for you. Please remember that the whole process consumes a lot of the reserved energy of the solar batteries, so experts suggest a 50% DOD Rate. It is a waste of energy during power transmission. That means if you need a 3000-watt inverter, you need to purchase a battery package of 6000 watts.

Depth of Depletion (DOD) Rate

Please note that an inverter can use 30% of the reserved power from the solar battery package. Therefore, experts recommend that a max of 50% DOD must be considered when calculating the storage capacity of the battery.

How Many Batteries Do You Need for a 3000-watt Solar System?

Many reputed brands promote 100Ah to 1000Ah batteries in Australia, USA, UK, Canada, India, and China. Indeed, 100Ah batteries are much less expensive than 1000Ah batteries.

3000 watts is equivalent to 3 Kilowatts. You only need one battery to power your system if you purchase a 500 Ah battery with 12 volts.

Factors that Determine the Number of Batteries for 3000-watt Inverter

In fact, it is not just the sole factor that determines the number of batteries. There are other elements to consider too. The most important aspects are:

Use of Solar Batteries as Backup Power

Many commercial and residential homeowners use hydro and solar energy to replace traditional coal power. In fact, these are fantastic alternatives because they are eco-friendly and renewable sources of energy. However, you need to invest upfront in setting up the system. Before investing an amount, you must decide whether you want to go completely off-grid or use it as an alternative backup power source.

This is why I’m breaking it into two sections.

Solar System as a Backup

In my home, I utilize an inverter to provide a power supply during power outages and grid issues. I hardly need this system for a few hours a week. I do not want to invest a high amount upfront. However, if you want to set it as a backup, you can install solar panels to save electricity bills. Otherwise (in my case), it uses an on-grid power supply to charge the batteries. In this case, you can buy 150Ah to 500Ah batteries. Do not use air conditioners, refrigerators, or computers during a power outage. The 3000-watt inverter is enough for residential premises.

Solar System for Off-grid Power Source

A lot of commercial buildings pay massive amounts of money for electricity. They believe it is better to take on the huge initial cost of hydro or solar energy instead of paying for coal energy. If you are thinking of doing this, it is recommended to consult an expert for an estimate of the expenditure and the number of batteries. Anything around the 15kW-30kW solar system is enough to go completely off-grid.

In this case, you need to power air conditioners, computers, and other electrical devices in the building. If you do not wish to utilize solar energy for commercial buildings, you could make an investment in hydropower. Both are environmentally friendly and will save you money over the long term.

I hope that I have answered your queries regarding the number of batteries you need for a 3kW solar system or inverter. A 500ah battery with 12 volts (or three 200AH batteries) is sufficient for your home. Still, if you have any questions, please leave a comment below.
